FAQ's
If you are new to homeschooling or are considering
homeschooling your child, you probably have a lot of
questions. First, let us say that homeschooling is a
wonderful adventure and worthy of pursuit! RHSA is not
an alternative to public or private school, but rather a
support group made up of individual families who have
chosen to homeschool their children. Now on to
your questions!Where do I start?
We suggest that you visit the Texas Home School
Coalition website.
www.thsc.org
This website if very helpful as far as
giving you information on the legality of homeschooling
in Texas.
What about curriculum?
There are many great homeschooling curriculums.
Choosing a curriculum is often the most challenging part
for new homeschoolers. We suggest that you take
some time to research homeschooling in general.
The choice of curriculum often depends on several
factors: your child's learning style, your reason for
homeschooling, and your desired level of involvement to
name a few. Here are some suggestions to get you
started:
-
Check your local library
to see if they have any books on homeschooling.
Authors such as Mary Pride, Cathy Duffy, and
Ruth Beechick
should be found at your local library.
-
The internet is a great
resource as well that can be used to obtain
information with regards to homeschooling. Type
in "homeschool curriculum", "styles of homeschooling",
or other variations into a search engine and many
websites will be located.
-
A local bookstore can also
be another great resource. Check your yellow pages -
Christian bookstores often stock curriculum as well as
many homeschool specific bookstores can be located.
-
Attending a "bookfair" or
"Homeschool Convention" is helpful. Visit
www.nthen.org or
www.homeschoolbookfair.org
for dates for the next
event.
-
Joining a support group is
also a great idea! The Richardson Home School
Association provides monthly meetings that can help
you to meet other homeschooling families in the North
Dallas area. Plus, each meeting is planned with some
type of help and support for your homeschooling
effort. A newsletter and email updates are provided to
keep you connected with events and other resources
available. Field Trips planned for RHSA members allow
you and your child to fellowship and learn with a
group. The RHSA Teaching Co-op can prove to be a vital
asset to your homeschooling. For more information
on joining RHSA, click
